Majority of my earrings tarnish and go green and make my ears green when I wear them for long times. I assumed it was because they were cheap so I bought a more expensive pair and it happened again. What kind of metals should I be looking for that won't tarnish while I wear them?

When the metal goes green that's an indication of copper present in the metal. Part of the natural oxidation process. Only pure silver, gold or platinum gold do not discolour when exposed to moisture or oxidation. Silver can take on a brown or black discoloration. The problem with going "pure" is that the metal is extremely soft & has little or no strength to it. It will mishape & if there are any stones or gems in the settings, they will likely fall out due to the lack of "holding" with the metal. Most jewelry such as gold or silver have nickel or brass added to them to give it more solidity. Nickel for silver. A relatively good combo), brass for gold another good combo except for that quite often there is a certain copper content in the brass which will leach out the green tale-tale signs of copper.

For some actresses it's all about the diamonds- big diamond ear rings with jewels as big of your thumbnail (yes, these are considered subtle on the red carpet). Other actresses like colored stones such as rubies and colored diamonds to adorn their hand, neck or ears.

Whether its borrowed 1 million dollar pieces or something from a personal selection, red carpet jewelry does not work on its own but instead has to be used in collaboration with their designer dress. Stylists know the secrets which is why on Oscar night they might be your best accessory of all.
