Diy Roller

Plastering advice or links for "how to" guides?

ok i have to plaster a room this weekend.
the room i am doing is it an old building and i will be plastering on old plaster and chip paper on the roof.

i am going to mix pva and water and apply with a roller before i plaster and i am going to use two coats of thistle multi finish plaster to do this - is this correct?

does anyone have any handy hints or links to a video "how to" for extra help? (particularly concerning the ceiling) ie where should i start eg. top to bottom, ceiling first etc

we can't afford to get a professional in so that is why i am tackling this myself.

i am pretty handy when it comes to DIY but i know plastering can be a tricky job.

also is it essential to get a mixer drill to mix the plaster? i am away to go and get the rest of the tools like the hawk and trowels etc so any advice on what size etc would also be a big help.

thanks for answers in advance

first two things wrong ...you cant plaster on top of paper ...any kind ..iv been in the game for over 40 years second ..better to use board finish ..not so fatty as there will be no suction ..apply pva neat ..let it get sticky ..then apply first coat ...leave 10 minutes ...it should lose its wet shine .. then apply second ...IMPORTANT ..do not over trowel ...it will go bumpy ..3 trowels should do ...don't panic take your time ...one thing you will need is a water brush .. to lightly wet on last time you trowel wall ..good trowel is a RAGNI ...sand edges and corners of trowel before you start ... if you can get an electric mixer it is a lot better as the lumps are gone and it goes on smoother

Hang Wallpaper Diy Top Tips On Hanging Wallpapers

Top tips for a better wallpapers hanging finish

• Nothing is more annoying than having to fish your brush out of the bucket and getting paste all over your hands. There are now brushes available that you can hook on the rim of the bucket, leaving you with clean hands.

• Make sure you check your paste when you hang vinyl wallpaper, as vinyl has difficulty sticking to itself.

• To remove air bubbles, it is very important to work quick and neat. Make a small incision in the air bubble when the paper is still wet, apply some paste behind it, and carefully smooth the paper over.

• Always be careful when you use the seam roller. Whereas it might help you smoothing the edges of your wallpaper, it also might smooth your pattern if you're not careful! It can also leave a sheen on certain paper, so practice on a test bit first, to establish the amount of pressure it allows you to use.

• Don't get paste on your table! It can be difficult sometimes to get wallpaper paste off the front of your wallpaper, so be careful.

• In order to reduce the amount of off-cuts, it is sometimes better to use two rolls at the same time to align the pattern of your wallpaper.

• It is not advisable to use a roller to apply paste to your wallpaper, unless the paper is really thick. If it's too thin, your paper will stick and roll around your roller.

• Turn off radiators in the room you want to wallpaper, especially if you have to wallpaper behind them. The heat from the radiator is likely to dry out the paper too quickly, leaving it to come off the wall.Visit the Woodworking Plans Website pages for more woodworking and DIY articles.
